Walker County school bus crash sends five children to hospital

Five children were taken to the hospital after a Walker County school bus was involved in a crash Tuesday morning, according to the preliminary investigation by Georgia State Patrol.

The bus was heading south on Cook Road in LaFayette when the driver drove off the right shoulder while going around a left curve, where the bus crashed into a tree, blocking the roadway, said Capt. Crystal Zion with the Georgia State Patrol.

The driver was issued a citation for failure to maintain lane of travel, Zion said in an email. Of the 37 students on the bus, 10 said they were hurt, and five were taken to a hospital in Chattanooga, Zion said.

The five students who went to the hospital were transported out of precaution, according to an announcement from Damon Raines, the Walker County superintendent of schools, on the system’s website.

Remaining students were either picked up by a guardian or transferred to another bus to deliver them to their respective schools. The students on the bus attend Naomi Elementary School, LaFayette Middle School and LaFayette High School.
