Though the forecast is still up in the air, one thing is for certain — Chattanooga’s about to get cold. As the winter weather descends on the area, there are a few organizations opening their doors to people who need shelter from the cold.

CHATT FOUNDATION

The Chatt Foundation, 727 E. 11th St., has a shelter normally open 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Starting Saturday, the shelter will be open 24/7 until the extreme cold weather has passed.

If the Chatt Foundation reaches its 350-person capacity, the Salvation Army will open as an overflow shelter. Holden Young, senior director of operations at the Chatt Foundation, said the organization has not been anywhere near capacity this season, and he doesn’t expect the shelter to hit capacity this weekend.

RESCUE MISSION

The Chattanooga Rescue Mission, 1512 S. Holtzclaw Ave., has both a men’s and women’s night shelter year-round, and beds are first-come, first-serve. Check-in for the shelter is from 5-5:30 p.m. each day. Dinner is served at 5:30 p.m., chapel service is at 6 p.m., and lights out is at 9 p.m.

UNION GOSPEL MISSION

The mission, 124 Signal Hills Drive, will be open as a warming shelter Saturday night, Sunday night and Monday night and will have space for 12 additional people, said Jon Rector, director of the Union Gospel Mission, via phone call.
