Holiday shopping doesn’t always end at the checkout counter. In fact, most shoppers end up making at least one return each season — so knowing a store’s refund and exchange policy can be just as important as finding the perfect gift.
Retailers aren’t legally required to accept returns or exchanges unless an item is defective or wasn’t described accurately. While many stores do offer return-friendly policies, the fine print can vary widely from brand to brand. Even your go-to stores may change their rules from year to year, so don’t assume — double-check before you buy. A quick look at the policy now can save you time, money and holiday stress later.
The following tips from your Better Business Bureau should help to make your holiday returns run more smoothly:
Get to know store policies. There’s no requirement for a business to post their return policy, so if you don’t see one, ask for details and ideally get the information in writing. Keep in mind that brick and mortar stores may have different return policies than their online sites.
Also, be sure you fully understand what, if anything, is required for a return or exchange before you head out.
