Here are three observations on the loss:

Missing the freebies: The Mocs were dominant offensively in the first half of the game, but it was a completely opposite result in the final 20 minutes. Nowhere was the offense effective — not from 3, where they were 2-for-8; not on 2-point attempts, where they were 6-for-18 and not even at the free throw line, where they missed three attempts. UTC missed a number of layups around the rim — yes, there were a couple where there were fouls — but the team needed baskets and fouls, and they weren’t able to make enough shots down the stretch.

Roster concerns: The Mocs have played most of the season without forwards Collin Mulholland and Latif Diouf, who have been battling injuries, and last Sunday lost forward Sean Cusano to a season-ending injury. True freshman Josh Bowman, who was likely going to redshirt this season, was thrust into duty as the team only has one player — senior Makai Richards — healthy and standing over 6-foot-8. Both struggled Saturday against the athleticism of the Redhawks.

Identity crisis: Because of the roster concerns this season, it’s been hard for this team to figure out just what it is and what it’s going to be. Right now, it’s not playing like a good team as the Mocs are 2-5 against Division I competition. The group is talented, no doubt, but the fact that nine new players joined the roster and that group hasn’t had time to jell means it just may not happen this season. There’s still a ton of time left, but at this point something is missing.

Quotable: “I’m a little more concerned about guys not doing what’s asked, so I have to do a better job of rewarding guys that do what’s asked.” — UTC head coach Dan Earl

“It starts in practice. That’s where you’re getting better every day and we can’t have off days. Right now we’ve had some really good practices and then we’ve had some practices that are not as good, not as sharp, and that’s on us. It should never be up and down, up and down. We have to be 100% the whole time, whether that’s in practice, in film, just locked in the whole time.” — sophomore guard Parker Robison, who had seven points and three rebounds
