Weekend winners
The 5-at-10 clan. Wow, what a graduation weekend. Seriously. Family from all parts of the U.S. in town to celebrate the (not-so) Lil’ 5-at-10 getting the first diploma of many. Then the weekend happened. Friday, they walked, and he handed the Mrs. 5-at-10 a rose during the ceremony to honor family members. The family went to Feed — where the 5-at-10s are akin to Norm, Cliff and Fraser at “Cheers” — for a great gathering. Saturday was the family and friends drop-by at the 5-at-10 compound, which the Mrs. 5-at-10 had engineered into a place that looked so good there was small talk about selling it because it could not look any better. Then came Sunday with brunch, a trip to the Chattanooga Market and then a friends party for NSL 5-at-10 and his best buds and their best buds at Clyde’s. And when I say we had 100-plus folks, it’s likely an understatement.
Aaron Rai. We knew this was destiny when Rai drilled this 50-plus-foot snake for birdie, right? Still, winning your first major when your previous career-best major finish was a T-19 is a big deal. Good for Rai, who ran away from a star-studded leaderboard and before Sunday was forever known as the good-guy golfer who wears two gloves. (Side question: Why not two gloves, you know?)
The Braves. Another weekend, another series win. Atlanta took two of three from Boston — which is more contender in name-recognition than game demonstration — and the pitching staff was aces. And if Austin Riley builds on the three-run homer he hit Sunday that has still not landed, look out NL. You too, Dodgers. Atlanta is an MLB-best 32-15 with an MLB-leading plus-98 run differential. And they have done all that with a) Ronald Acuña Jr. battling injuries, and b) Riley slashing a very pedestrian .220/.287/.384 right now. Side note: If we voted right now, Drake Baldwin should be the NL MVP. Yes, even over the forever unicorn of value named Shohei.
