Right off the bat, let me state unequivocally that most preachers I have been blessed to know have been and are fine gentlemen, careful handlers of Scripture, level-headed and intelligent. I preface with these words because, without soiling the column with his name, I am going to mention one who is none of those things, and I do not want anyone to get the impression that he is indicative of anything but a small sliver of insanity in the ranks of the clergy.
“You wives, if your husband slaps you down and you call the police on him, you are wicked; what an evil broad! You say, ‘Oh, my husband’s got a temper and he’s constantly slapping me.’ Here’s the thing: quit pissing him off!”
That was from a sermon preached just a couple of weeks ago; let that little gem sink in for a moment.
This is by no means the only hinky homiletics from the crazed clergy in question. In 2009, he preached that he hated Barack Obama and wanted him to die that night and go to hell and melt there like a snail. In follow-up interviews, he said, “I hope that God strikes Barack Obama with brain cancer so he can die like Ted Kennedy, and I hope it happens today.”
His older children are estranged from him and the family. In July of this year, he said this while preaching: “I’ve become extremely angry because of what my four evil, eldest children have done to me. What they did is so sick and so evil and so wicked… they’re wicked, and they need to repent immediately, or they need to be punished by God. Why would I want those evil pieces of trash influencing my other eight children? I don’t ever want to see them again. If I ever see them again, it’ll be too soon. If they don’t repent, they need to be destroyed by God.”
