Art Garfunkel, who along with Paul Simon helped give voice to the ’60s for many people, will perform Saturday night, Jan. 30, at the Tivoli Theatre.

As a duo, Simon and Garfunkel were known for such folk/rock classics as “Mrs. Robinson,” “Scarborough Fair,” “The Sound of Silence,” “The Boxer” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

The duo split up in 1970, around the same time Garfunkel found work in Hollywood, landing several major film roles, including “Carnal Knowledge” (opposite Jack Nicholson), “Catch 22” and Nicholas Roeg’s “Bad Timing/A Sensual Obsession.”

His artistic pursuits also have included a book of poetry, 1989’s “Still Water,” and 12 solo albums, beginning with “Angel Clare,” which included the Top 10 hit “All I Know.”

Another pursuit, a 12-year walk across Japan, Europe and the United States, was documented in a 1997 DVD, “Across America.” He’s also an avid reader, having logged 1,210 finished books, which he’s chronicled on his website.

He spent the ’80s and ’90s back in front of an audience.

“Taking on the fear and vulnerability of a live show keeps you vital,” Garfunkel has said. “I’m a singer trying to get away with a lucky job. I try to soothe, to lift. That’s my life.”

Simon and Garfunkel have reunited a couple of times since the split, doing a huge concert in New York’s Central Park in 1981. They also reunited in 2010 on the 50th anniversary of “Sound of Silence” as part of the 38th American Film Institute Life Achievement Awards.

Garfunkel last performed in Chattanooga in 2002 at the Riverbend Festival.
