BEAVER CREEK, Colo. (AP) – Bode Miller hit his left arm on a gate, spun backward and lost both skis in a crash Thursday at the world championships.

The 37-year-old American skier had a deep cut on his right calf.

Miller was competing in his first race since back surgery in November and had a fast run going. He was in the lead midway through the course when he wiped out and slid for quite a while down the hill.

Once Miller stopped sliding, he waited for someone to bring him his skis. Then he clicked back in and wrapped up his run, albeit missing one of his poles. He waved to the crowd after crossing the finish line.

His wife, professional volleyball player Morgan Miller, was in the stands when the accident happened.
