Traditions: The State of Dade Heritage Festival each year in May celebrates the county’s history, focusing on the myths and truths of Dade County threatening to secede from Georgia and the recognition by President Harry Truman of Dade County’s return to the Union on July 4, 1945. Georgia had no roads connecting to the state’s northwestern-most county until 1939.
Famous landmark: In the heart of downtown stands the Dade County Courthouse, a 1926 building that could double for the set of the 1962 film “To Kill A Mockingbird.” Many offices in the building were moved in 2010 to a new building a few blocks away.
