Lee Univeristy Flames beat old rival Tennessee Temple

The Lee University men’s basketball team, ranked 17th in NAIA Division I, shot only 33.3 percent from the field and committed 19 turnovers but scrapped out a 60-50 win Tuesday evening in Chattanooga against longtime rival Tennessee Temple. Ryan Westbrooks scored 16 points and Alex Wells added 12 in the victory for the Flames (14-4), who got nine rebounds from Johnny Godette and eight apiece from Patrick Shaughnessy and Steve Bennett. Germeil Daniels and Josh Morris each had 12 points and eight rebounds for Temple (8-10), and Jarrett Smith had six assists and three steals and nine points. Corey Sanders made four steals. Lee’s Lady Flames moved up to No. 5 in the NAIA poll Monday.

* Alex Miller scored 22 points and Ben Patton added 17 and Bud Todd had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Georgia Northwestern Bobcats on Tuesday at the Rossville Athletic Complex, but Clayton State’s junior varsity pulled out a 66-63 victory. Clayton State is an NCAA Division II school. Georgia Northwestern (7-11) will celebrate its five years of varsity athletics in Saturday’s 2 p.m. game against Macon State at the RAC, with the undefeated first basketball team for then Northwestern Tech being honored.

* The Sewanee women’s basketball team’s scheduled game Tuesday night at Free Will Baptist Bible was canceled. The Nashville school called it off because of injuries added to an already thin roster.

Volleyball

* Bryan College recently signed Kelsea Knudsen from Sugar Hill, Ga., and North Gwinnett High School for the 2012 volleyball team at the Dayton school. Knudsen is a 5-foot-10 outside or right-side hitter who helped lead North Gwinnett to the state round of 16 in 2009 and the elite eight in 2010 before tearing an ACL last season and refocusing her role as team chaplain. “Kelsea is a great volleyball player with a great story,” Bryan coach David Shumaker said in a school release. “She was an all-state player as a junior who injured her knee on the opening day of her senior season. Instead of whining and complaining, Kelsea took her injury as a challenge from God and grew through the experience. … Kelsea will bring both skill and perspective to her collegiate experience.” Knudsen’s rehab has her expecting to play soon with her club team. She has a brother, Kenny, on the Bryan baseball team.

Wrestling

* Former East Ridge standout wrestler Dirk Holland, a state champion in 1977 at 155 pounds, died Tuesday in Clemmons, N.C., after a battle with cancer. Following his career with the Pioneers, Holland wrestled for the University of Tennessee.
