Mansfield sets personal record in taking Brainerd lead

The nerves and shakes of playing in a golf tournament caught up with Trent Mansfield at an awkward time.

He handled the traditional first-tee jitters, only to open his first round of the Brainerd Invitational with a bogey. He handled his nerves on every putt throughout the day as if he were a seasoned professional instead of a freshman at Tennessee Wesleyan.

“I was shaking after the round,” Mansfield said. “I’m sitting here in shock. The best score I’d ever shot was a 68.”

He toppled that personal record.

Mansfield shot a 6-under-par 66 and leads the 70th playing of the tournament. Chris Hall, a two-time champion, shot a 67 despite having played Friday for the first time since May 6 due to business obligations.
