Hamilton County names 3 principals

Hamilton County Schools officials announced the assignment of three new principals for next year.

Dr. Justin Robertson, Dr. Tom McCullough and Janice Scott will assume the leadership of Brown Middle School, Signal Mountain Middle High School and Snow Hill Elementary School, respectively.

“We are excited about these qualified individuals leading our schools,” said Superintendent Jim Scales. “I know they have the skills and talent to help our schools move to the next level.”

Dr. Robertson will succeed retiring principal John Stewart at Brown Middle on July 1.

A Chattanooga native, Dr. Robertson began his teaching career at Boyd-Buchanan School in 2000 before moving to Memphis as a history teacher at Germantown High School in 2002. He moved back to Chattanooga in 2008 as assistant principal at Normal Park Museum Magnet Upper School.

He was promoted to principal of Lookout Valley Elementary School in 2009.

Dr. Robertson received a bachelor of arts in history from Lipscomb University and a master’s of education and doctorate of education at Union University in 2004 and 2008, respectively.

On July 1, Dr. McCullough will assume the position of principal at Signal Mountain Middle High, where he has served as interim principal since September 2009.

He began teaching math and science at East Ridge and Hixson highs from 1969 to 1975, before becoming assistant principal of Hixson High. He was promoted to principal of Hixson High in 1982.

In 1990, he left to be dean of instruction at Chattanooga State Community College. In 1998, he became superintendent of Chattooga County Schools before moving to Early County Schools in Blakely, Ga., as superintendent in 2001. He opened the David Brainerd private school in 2004, staying there until it closed in 2009.

Dr. McCullough received his master’s in education administration from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and his doctorate from Vanderbilt University in 1986.

Ms. Scott, who currently is assistant principal at East Brainerd Elementary School, will take over as principal of Snow Hill on July 1. Ms. Scott replaces Shane Harwood, who is moving to Nolan Elementary on Signal Mountain.

Ms. Scott began her career in education as a special education teacher in Nashville in 1978. She moved to Rivermont Elementary School in Hamilton County in 1981.

In 1997 she became a Title I teacher before taking on a comprehensive development class at McConnell Elementary School in 2000. She was promoted to assistant principal at East Brainerd Elementary in 2007.

She has a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Tennessee and a master’s degree in special education/emotional/behavioral and administrative endorsement from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
