Chattanooga has lost one of its most prominent and lively pastors and one of our community’s most outstanding civic leaders with the death Monday of Dr. Jack McEwen, a former pastor of First Baptist Church of Chattanooga.
Few Chattanoogans have spoken so many times, and so inspiringly, to local church congregations, civic clubs and other prominent gatherings as McEwen. On each occasion, his presentation was engaging, unique and constructive.
McEwen, whose death came at age 84, served as pastor of First Baptist Church from 1973 to 1980.
He was much sought after as an inspirational speaker, and he combined the Christian gospel with history and colorful commentary.
McEwen was quick of wit and always eager to promote good will.
