SUITLAND, Md. (AP) – A person shot and critically wounded a guard at the U.S. Census Bureau headquarters Thursday before leading police on a chase that reportedly ended with the suspect and a an officer wounded.

The guard had a gunshot wound to his upper body and was taken to a local hospital in extremely critical condition, Prince George’s County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady told The Associated Press in a text message.

The Washington Post quoted law enforcement officers as saying there was a chase after the guard was shot and that the suspect was shot in the head. Police did not respond to repeated requests for comment from the AP.

The Census Bureau is located in Suitland, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C. Thousands of people work on the campus.

The roads around the enormous compound were still closed late Thursday, but an AP reporter could see some cars leaving the area fairly regularly. The reporter also could hear a loud announcement being made from inside the complex, but it was unintelligible.
