NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office is using an iris scan system to register sex offenders.
Officials said the system, valued at $10,000, could be used in the future to identify and track inmates. It was made available by a grant from the National Sheriff’s Association.
Iris recognition biometric technology positively identifies an individual by capturing a high-resolution digital photograph of an iris.
It will be used during bookings, and its data will be included in a national database. Additionally, the information may help determine when an offender is wanted in another jurisdiction.
Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall said the grant was the first of its kind in the country.
