The next installment of Lee University’s Presidential Concert Series will pulse to a pop beat as Arrival From Sweden performs the music of ABBA backed by Lee’s Symphony Orchestra. The performance is scheduled Monday, Sept. 26, in Conn Center on the Cleveland, Tenn., campus.
Considered one of the world’s most popular ABBA show bands, Arrival From Sweden has toured 48 nations since its start in 1995. In press material, members say their hope is to carry on the legacy of the original group.
ABBA, originally from Sweden, was the most commercially successful pop music group of the 1970s. Arrival sings an array of ABBA’s hits, including, “Dancing Queen, “Mamma Mia,” “Does Your Mother Know,” “Take a Chance,” “SOS,” “Super Trouper” and “Waterloo.”
The vocalists also wear exact copies of the original stage costumes of ABBA, with permission granted by the supergroup’s clothing designer.
The Lee Symphony Orchestra is returning for its fourth pops performance on the Presidential Concert stage, after collaborating with guest artists in tributes to The Beatles, Billy Joel and Elton John, and Simon and Garfunkel.
The ensemble is conducted by Robert Bernhardt, who led the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera for 19 years. Bernhardt joined Lee’s School of Music in the fall of 2011 as an artist-in-residence and conductor of the Lee Symphony Orchestra. He also serves as music director emeritus and principal pops conductor for the CSO and is principal pops conductor for symphonies in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Louisville, Ky.
