Brawn, not brains too often glorified
Did you count the number of pages in the sports section of today’s newspaper? Did you notice how many minutes of the evening TV news was devoted to sports?
OK, nobody counts, but you saw lots of it; some famous coach got another million bucks a year (his star quarterback gets $13 million).
How about those reports about math and science stars? The glowing coverage of the highest performing student in high school biology? Wow! Science and technology students got zero nada nothing at all. And the gals and guys who teach those kids; they may not be paid enough to support a family.
So who do you think will design the next generation of aircraft? Who will discover the cure for the next epidemic disease that arises? Who will plan the great skyscrapers? Hint: their names aren’t on the sports pages and nowhere else in the news.
