Report: VW looking at making Golf in U.S.

German automaker Volkswagen, which just marked the opening of its only U.S. production plant in Chattanooga, is considering production of its Golf model in the U.S., according to German media reports today.

Volkswagen’s top labor representative Bernd Osterloh is cited as saying during a staff meeting on Tuesday that management is considering to produce some Golf models in the U.S. instead of exporting them from Germany, according to daily regional newspapers Wolfsburger Allgemeine and Braunschweiger Zeitung.

The Golf is an important model for Volkswagen’s main plant in Wolfsburg. Osterloh wants to discuss production plans with Volkswagen’s management board, Wolfsburger Allgemeine reports.

A Volkswagen spokesman told Dow Jones Newswires that the automaker’s production chief Michael Macht plans to discuss the issue with the works council and is confident that a solution will be found.
