A Work(ing) Space

It’s been 1,032 work hours since I sat at a proper desk.

Sunday marked six months since Hamilton County’s first confirmed case of COVID-19 – and since most of us traded office cubicles for home workspaces.

In that time I’ve made makeshift workspaces for myself around the house: hunched over the kitchen table; cross-legged on the couch; sprawled in bed with the dogs as my armrests.

Several trips to the massage therapist later, I am ready for something permanent, especially as I foresee it will be next year before our staff returns to our downtown office. Now facing the reality that this is the new normal, I’ve started scouring websites and thrift stores.

“Get here when we open,” one Habitat ReStore employee told me when I inquired about the likelihood of finding a suitable desk there. “Everyone is looking for smaller desks so we’ve raised the prices on those,” he added, perhaps sensing my mother’s “thriftiness” in me. (I’ve set a mental price limit of $50.)

I’m not alone, as evidenced by our first story below. So read on for tips on how to make the most of your new office space. And please message me if you find an affordable workspace solution.
