Mountain City Club captain Justin “Wings” Angel has led his team to the top of the Tennessee Association of Vintage Base Ball standings, tied with the other local team, the Lightfoot Club. Those stats are set to change Saturday, June 18, when the teams play each other in a single match beginning at noon at the former Army Post at Fort Oglethorpe’s polo field, 2 Barnhardt Circle. This is the second year of play for both clubs, and both are undefeated with 5-0 records. This season, the Lightfoot Club has scored 79 aces (runs) and allowed 51 to be scored against them. The Mountain City Club has scored 81 aces and allowed only eight aces to be scored against them. The league observes the rules and customs of barehanded base ball of the 19th century. Admission is free. Spectators should bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. The adjacent 6th Cavalry Museum will be open for tours of the Smithsonian Institution’s “Hometown Teams” exhibition.
