Surprises happen every week on the high school football field, and the Times Free Press staff is all over them. Here are four notable surprises from this past week's action:
Whitwell junior Bennett McDougal expected a hard-fought game Friday night at Sale Creek, and he provided a performance to meet the demand.
Lookout Valley High School baseball sophomore pitcher Eli Pell is no stranger to being put in big spots and delivering on the mound.
By trade Ron Cox has been a builder all of his adult life. For the past nine years Cox also constructed the Sale Creek High School football program, starting from scratch and building a solid foundation that took the team to the Class 1A playoffs each of the past five seasons.
With 6:45 left in the fourth quarter, Courtney Zensen drove from the top left of the arc into the paint where she powered through a close-line from two defenders to still make a left-handed layup.
Sale Creek scored first and last, but in between there was a whole lot of South Pittsburg.
Sale Creek High School volleyball coach Erin Briner hopes the program's 13th district championship in a row is just the start of great postseason success.
The label of state champions will follow the South Pittsburg Pirates all football season, but it won't win any games for them this year.
The annual Best of Preps high school football jamboree began Thursday at Finley Stadium with seven quarters of action.
The return of 18 starters and the confidence gained by winning five of their last eight games last year - scoring an average of 52 points in those wins for a program-best overall record - could be the combination needed for the Panthers to take another big step.
For the 23 teams participating in the annual Best of Preps football jamboree, it's a dress rehearsal before the curtain raises to open the regular season next week. For prep football fans, it's a chance to whet their appetites during the three-day event, which begins Thursday at Finley Stadium.
