Surprises happen every week on the high school football field, and the Times Free Press staff is all over them. Here are four notable surprises from this past week's action:
Multisport excellence is the common theme among the finalists for this year's Best of Preps Scrappy Moore Female Athlete of the Year award, with five of the six earning all-star recognition in more than one sport.
Hector Holguin admitted late in the season that his Southeast Whitfield High School boys' soccer team sometimes needed a little adversity to play its best.
The Gordon Lee High School bats have awakened just in time for the postseason.
After an up-and-down regular season, the Ringgold Tigers were on upset alert entering the first round of the GHSA Class AAA baseball playoffs against Hart County.
The final day of the regular season for GHSA baseball programs was packed with major playoff implications and, for the most part, teams in favorable situations survived.
It's not often a baseball coach likens his team to a horse, but Ringgold's Drew Walker sees a resemblance to a famous equine in this year's lineup.
Baseball playoffs are set to begin in Georgia next week, and while a handful of teams can at least rest easy knowing they will have a postseason spot, several more head into play Tuesday needing a big week to move on.
Sale Creek's baseball team continues to offer proof that it is a legitimate state title contender in TSSAA Class A. The Panthers, pulling from a high school student body of just more than 300, are showing they can compete with the big dogs, too.
Southeast Whitfield scored twice in the second period of overtime to stun Northwest Whitfield in boys' soccer Friday night.
Ooltewah senior baseball players Patrick Clarkson and Zach Cates made key plays Thursday to help lead the Owls to a win at Boyd Buchanan.
