Tennessee to get $608 million in expanded Pell grants

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The White House says the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act is expected to provide more than $657 million to Tennessee by academic year 2020-2021 in additional benefits for higher education.

President Barack Obama signed the bill into law Tuesday at Northern Virginia Community College near Washington.

Obama signed the main health care legislation on Tuesday in the East Room. This final piece tweaks some parts of it that House members insisted be changed for their votes.

In a news release, the White House says federal Department of Education officials estimate Tennessee’s students will receive an additional $608 million in Pell Grants due to the changes in the new law.

There is also $34 million for historically black and minority-serving colleges over the next decade.

Another $13 million is coming to help attract low-income students and help them manage college loan debt.
