President Barack Obama and many Democrats in the majority in Congress, and some of our people, are cheering because of the recent enactment of the trillion-dollar-plus ObamaCare health bill — as though it were “free.”
But a majority of our people have indicated in current polls that they oppose ObamaCare, mostly because of its tremendous cost and federal government control.
But we have ObamaCare — and ObamaCare “has us”! Will a majority of Americans be celebrating when the trillion-dollar-plus bill comes due?
Who will pay then?
Promise now, ObamaCare supporters said. But they didn’t make very clear who will pay — and how much — in the years ahead.
Many people have applauded Social Security, and still do. What will most Americans say when Social Security’s promises this year begin requiring more payout money than high Social Security taxes will bring in?
Who will favor tax increases then?
Unfortunately, Social Security and ObamaCare are not the only federal promises in excess of income from taxes that already are too high.
Who is going to pay for those programs, in addition to ObamaCare and Social Security? We will.
We already have a national debt of $12.8 trillion. It is growing by the minute. We are going to have to pay billions of dollars just in interest on that borrowed money.
Who will pay the bill? We will.
President Obama and many in Congress may be “gone” when the big bills become evident to everyone. But the huge financial obligations won’t “go away.” Who wants to pay them?
Many of us will still be here. Some of us won’t. But our country, we hope, will still be here. And so will our children and grandchildren. So will the growing spending that will have to be paid for.
There wasn’t much cheering on deck when the Titanic was sinking. There won’t be much celebrating when the American people realize the financial obligations that have been irresponsibly imposed upon the people of our country.
Spend now, pay later? We don’t want to pay now — or later. So why have we let our elected officials, representing “us,” vote to make “us” pay so much — surely more than we want to pay — perhaps even more than we can possibly pay?
Hadn’t we better think about that now, possibly in time to prevent disaster?
