Edward Baxter Jr.

Edward Leonard Baxter Jr., of Hixson, died Tuesday, April 6, 2010.

He was born Feb. 10, 1925.

Having lived a life full of interest in things, how those things work, how to make those things and often times successfully manufacturing them, Leonard found peace and love throughout his entire life. Though challenged with a war wound suffered in France during WWII, Leonard had a charm second to none which allowed those around him to become equally as interesting themselves. Though he loved and enjoyed many things, he held particular affinity for animals, history, motorcycles and generally having fun which accentuated his unique and encapsulating smile. Leonard also greatly valued his friendships, some lasting more than 75 years. Those who knew him well would revel in the facts and historical significance of life and the world shared only among the closest friends who also shared the same passion. His life was significantly impacted through relationships, his children, his experiences in such a way he was able to choose what is perhaps the most significant choice of life – the choice of salvation. Leonard did battle with a number of physical ailments yet did not suffer in his days and was surrounded by those who love and believe in him as he made his way to heaven peacefully.

Leonard was born an only child to the late Edward Leonard Baxter and Corrine B. Brown. Leonard was married to Dorthea Stage having two children, Douglas and Elizabeth. Later he was married to Nell Austin, having one child, David Baxter. He was later married to Jane Farmer having no children of their own. Leonard will forever be remembered by his beloved grandchildren Jake, Dulcie and Sophie. He will also always be remembered by his many friends, extended family and those who cared so well for his needs throughout his later years.

Leonard served proudly in the U.S. Army during WWII, 8th Infantry Division, coming home a Purple Heart recipient from a leg shot in France in 1944. Graduating high school from Red Bank, then from the University of Chattanooga as a civil engineer, Leonard went on to work at American Lava and finally retiring from TVA in 1993. From 1958 through 1995, Leonard also owned and operated Baxter Plastics in Chattanooga.

As a long, interesting life is meant to be celebrated, Leonard’s family encourages friends to attend a visitation/memorial service on Thursday, April 15, 2010, from 4 p.m. through 8 p.m. at Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel, 601 Ashland Terrace, Hixson.

Friends are also invited to attend Leonard’s burial service at 2:20 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at Chattanooga National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at Coulter Chapel no later than 1:30 p.m. Friday for the drive to the National Cemetery where Leonard will be laid to rest with military honours. His son David will share the graveside eulogy.

A reception in Leonard’s honour will be held following the burial service. The family wishes to invite all friends to attend. Details will be provided at the visitation and burial services.

Visit www.lanefh.com to share condolences.

The family requests flowers be sent to Coulter Chapel and any financial donations to be made to the SPCA on Leonard’s behalf.

He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and Omicron Delta Kappa honorary leadership fraternity. During his college career, he also worked as a sportswriter for the Jackson Daily News while serving as two-year editor of the college newspaper, only the second person in the school’s history to do so, his predecessor being his future father-in-law, Norman Bradley. Following his 1953 graduation from Millsaps and US Army service, he received a master’s degree from Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

He briefly worked in Roanoke Va., then joined the staff of the Chattanooga Times in 1957 as a copy editor.

In 1964 the family moved to Louisville, Ky. where he served the Louisville Times in a number of positions; after a Professional Journalism Fellowship to Stanford University, he became an editorial writer and later Editorial Editor of the Times, then the first Editorial Editor of the combined Courier-Journal and Louisville Times and finally Editorial Editor of the Courier-Journal when it assumed single status. Van retired briefly in 1989, then moved to Allentown Pa. as Editorial Editor of The Morning-Call, where he brought best-of-state awards to that newspaper within a year, to add to a number of other personal and professional recognitions in Kentucky and Pennsylvania. His journalistic career not only afforded him the opportunity to travel the world but allowed him personal access to interesting personalities from Archbishop Desmond Tutu to Yasser Arafat to surviving dissidents from a number of former Iron Curtain countries.

Van particularly valued his close connection with other editorial writers through membership in – and presidency of – the National Conference of Editorial Writers, which awarded him a Life Membership in 1995. Upon his retirement from The Morning-Call in 1997, Van and Caroline returned to Lookout Mountain where they have continued to make their home in the house where they met. Over the years, Van maintained an active involvement in a variety of community pursuits, most especially the Episcopal Church, which he served as vestryman and diocesan representative in Louisville, Bethlehem Pa., and Lookout Mountain.

At the time of his death, he was in the third part of a four-year Education for Ministry program to prepare lay members for more extensive leadership. Van also participated in the initial Senior Neighbors Leadership Academy and the first Holmberg Arts Leadership Institute in Chattanooga.
