Judith Wassom
ROCKWOOD – Judith Owings Wassom passed away Sunday, April 11, 2010, and Roane County said farewell to a grand southern lady.
She was a mighty woman of faith with a deep love for and a daily walk with Jesus Christ. She was bold in prayer and witnessing for Jesus because she believed in God’s Word, and the life-changing power that it could perform in an individual’s life. She was a lifetime member of Rockwood United Methodist Church where she and her husband, John Stanley Wassom, worshipped, served others, and participated in the many projects and events the church organized over the years.
Her home was a special place for both family and friends. She loved hosting parties and dinners, and making everyone who walked through the doors to feel special. Coming to their home gave family and friends a true understanding of the meaning of “home”; a place where everyone felt welcome, loved, and accepted. For 19 years she and John Stanley graciously entertained hundreds of Christmas home tour guests to express hospitality and share their love for Rockwood and its citizens.
That same caring love translated into the classroom, as well. She was currently in her 45th year of teaching at Roane County High School (RCHS) spanning three generations of students. She loved every minute of teaching and her students with all of her heart. She was a special teacher who pushed her students, as well as anyone she cared about, to be the very best they could be. Most importantly, she encouraged and helped them to achieve their personal best.
During her teaching career at RCHS, she was involved in multiple groups and activities. She and Ina Oran started the Republican Club-Judy has been the only sponsor the club has ever had. They went for the first time to the inauguration of President George W. Bush in 2004. During one of the many times she was the sponsor for the homecoming, she orchestrated and gained approval to allow convertibles to escort the girls on the field during the halftime ceremony. Judy also planned and organized the first homecoming parade. While acting as Beta Club Sponsor, Judy and her group raised money to pave the first students’ parking lot at Roane County High School.
Judy found her niche participating in groups and organizations for obvious reasons-she loved God, family, country and home. During the swearing in ceremony to fill her husband’s, (John Stanley Wassom), city council seat, she said that there were only two places she ever wanted to live-Rockwood and Heaven. Her passion for her hometown led her to work tirelessly and enthusiastically with Rockwood 2000 for 20 years striving to revitalize and promote the city of Rockwood. She was instrumental in the procuring the clock tower, the city park, the star on the mountain, and the Christmas lights that adorn Gateway and other important historic city streets. She always said of the Angels on Gateway that they symbolize the Angels of Heaven ushering you through the town and watching over it.
Judy also worked with the Roane County Heritage Commission Board and its efforts to preserve the rich history and heritage of Roane County. Judy’s heart-felt zeal for history and heritage stems from the fact that her family established themselves in the area even before the founding of Rockwood. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and valued the rich heritage of her ancestors. She encouraged others to honor the memory of their loved ones and the sacrifices they had made in order to “preserve the past and prepare for the future” as the Rockwood 2000 motto states.
Above all the personal and social accolades Judy collected through the years, her most prized and cherished accomplishment was raising a fine daughter, Zoe’, and spending time with her four grandchildren–Jarrod, Joshua, Jackson, and Zoe’-Kate. Whether it was going to the dentist, the shops, the ball fields and courts, or to school events, Judy beamed proudly of the wonderful gifts her daughter gave her through those grandkids. Each time another grandchild came into her life, the experience reaffirmed her faith that God IS Good, God is ALWAYS in control, and God blesses those who love and honor Him. She mostly enjoyed the times one or all of the grandchildren spent the night. They would read stories, play games, learn scripture, or something that she knew would instill in them a love for God, family and country. Judy deeply rooted in faith prophesied over each one of her grandchildren knowing that the God that brought them to her, would also oversee their continued development and life experiences even after she was gone. One thing she made sure her grandchildren memorized and spoke every morning before leaving the house was the 91st Psalm.
Judy was preceded in death by her husband, John Stanley Wassom; her parents, Zola and Tom Owings; her sister, Betty Martin; and her brother, Jack Owings.
She is survived by her daughter, Zoe’ Neerman; son-in-law, J.J. Neerman; her four grandchildren, Jarrod, Joshua, Jackson and Zoe’-Kate Neerman; her sisters, Sammye Myers and Lynne Tait; her brothers, Tommy and Ed Owings; and many nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Judy’s Life Services are Sunday, April 18, 2010, at Rockwood United Methodist Church in Rockwood, Tenn., beginning with the Receiving of Friends from 1 until 3 pm, followed by the Service with the Rev. Keith Knight and Dr. Charles Mattson officiating.
