Iceland’s volcanic eruption

The remote North Atlantic Ocean island nation of Iceland, population about 300,000, doesn’t usually get much attention. But it is today because a volcano under a glacier has exploded in Iceland, casting extensive clouds of dust and causing breathing problems for some over Western Europe.

Thousands of airline schedules have been disrupted, to avoid having volcanic dust drawn into jet engines, where heat would turn dust into glassy globs, possibly stopping the engines.

There are many human disruptions in our complex and troubled world. But we still are awed by such tremendous demonstrations of the power of nature.
