Mother Nature must’ve wanted Central’s softball program to raise a little more money for breast cancer awareness.
The Lady Pounders hosted Red Bank on Tuesday in a District 6-AA high school game that was in the top of the fifth inning when heavy rain began to fall. The game was delayed a few minutes before the umpires declared the field unplayable.
The game, which again will be a “pink out” with profits going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, will be replayed today at Central at 4:30 p.m.
“Both teams are going to wear pink again,” Central coach LeeAnne Shurette said. “We won’t ask anyone to pay again if they paid already, but maybe people wouldn’t mind donating if they weren’t here today.”
The Lady Pounders are currently the only unbeaten team in the district standings. WIth a victory, Red Bank could create a three-way tie for first, with East Ridge being the other.
The Lady Lions will have to try to win without senior shortstop and leadoff batter Bailey Lyness, who severely sprained an ankle landing on first base in practice Monday and was in a soft cast and on crutches at Tuesday’s game. Coach Mandi Munn said the injury will be reevaluated for ligament damage in a week, after the swelling subsides. Senior pitcher and first baseman Kamron Adkins has been out since breaking an ankle sliding on March 18.
“I can’t keep my seniors out there,” Munn said.
