Governor seeks compromise on budget

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Gov. Phil Bredesen said Wednesday that he is willing to work out a deal with Republicans in the state Legislature to close the gap in the state budget.

Bredesen said he would be willing to accept a mix of tax increases, budget cuts and reserve spending to resolve about $135 million in differences within the state’s $28 billion budget.

But Bredesen said he expects Republicans to present their plan after opposing his proposals to bridge the gap by eliminating sales tax breaks for cable television services and expensive items.

“I think what’s happening is everybody’s waiting see what the Senate Republicans’ plan is,” Bredesen said.
