Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond will honor civilian and sworn employees today at an awards banquet from 6-8 p.m. at the Chester Frost Pavilion, 2318 Gold Point Circle North in Hixson.
Local surgeon honored
Chattanooga surgeon Dr. Joseph Cofer of University Surgical Associates has been elected to be a fellow of the American Surgical Association.
Dr. Cofer, director of the surgery residency program for the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga, was inducted into the American Surgical Association at the group’s 130th annual meeting this month in Chicago.
“Dr. Cofer’s accomplishments both as a surgeon and educator well qualify him for this prestigious membership,” said Dr. Phillip Burns, chairman of the board at University Surgical Associates and chairman of the department of surgery at the UT College of Medicine in Chattanooga, in a release.
Dr. Cofer is one of 26 surgeons from Tennessee elected as members to the American Surgical Association.
University Surgical Associates’ Dr. Burns is the only other representative from Chattanooga in the organization, the release said.
