DID YOU KNOW?* The Vidalia Onion Committee is promoting the new Shrek movie, “Shrek Forever After,” opening May 21, on its Web site. What do ogres and onions have in common? Layers of appeal, according to the site.* Only onions grown in a 20-county area of South Georgia can be called Vidalias.* Vidalia onions are the official state vegetable of Georgia.
Boynton Lions Club in Catoosa County, Ga., is taking advance orders for Vidalia onions. Proceeds from this annual fundraiser aid the club’s vision projects.
Customer pickup day will be in early May at Boynton United Methodist Church, 4246 Boynton Drive.
“We will also make them available at various locations around the community,” said club president Norman Lansford.
Because of weather delays in planting last year, growers have not set the date for the club to pick up the onions fresh from the ground.
“They are telling us the first week of May,” said fundraising chairman Jim Cosper. “As soon as we know for sure, we will put the word out on when we will have them available for pickup around the community.”
Cost is $5 for a 5-pound bag, $10 for a 10-pound bag and $20 for a 25-pound bag.
“This project will assist us in fulfilling the increasing requests we are receiving from the community for assistance with eyeglasses and other sight needs,” Cosper said.
The organization works on a statewide level with Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind and the Emory Child Care Center.
The Lions Club also will have a booth to conduct free vision tests at Ringgold’s 1890s Days Jamboree May 28-29.
