NASHVILLE – State Rep. Harry Brooks, chairman of the House Education Committee, said today that he is a candidate for speaker of the state House of Representatives in the 107th General Assembly.
Brooks, R-Knoxville, said his candidacy is motivated by a desire to improve the state’s education system at a time when “pushback” can be expected from those upset by higher testing standards and other system changes, as well as enhancing economic development and job opportunities.
Brooks is the fourth Republican to indicate an interest in replacing House Speaker Kent Williams, who was elected speaker in January 2009, with the support of all 49 House Democrats and his own vote.
