Voter turnout predictably low for primary runoff

ATLANTA – Turnout was expected to be low, but no problems were reported in Georgia’s primary runoff election.

By mid-afternoon Tuesday, turnout was relatively low around the state. Election officials in several counties guessed turnout wouldn’t crack 10 percent.

Charlotte Sosebee, interim director of elections in Hall County, home to Republican gubernatorial candidate Nathan Deal, said turnout was comparable to that in the July primary, about 14 percent by 3 p.m.

Matt Carrothers with the secretary of state’s office, which oversees elections, said turnout in primary runoffs is typically low, not topping 7 percent in the last four primary runoffs.

Republican voters are choosing candidates for governor and attorney general, while the only statewide race on the Democratic ballot was secretary of state.
