The Tennessee Smokies squared their series with Chattanooga with an 8-4 victory Friday night, spoiling the AT&T Field debut of Will Savage in the process.
Savage, who was promoted Aug. 7 from the high Single-A California League, allowed eight runs on 12 hits in his first Double-A decision. He allowed one run to score on a wild pitch and another on a balk as the Lookouts had their four-game winning streak snapped.
Tennessee, which had won eight straight until Chattanooga’s 5-3 win Thursday, improved to 31-17 with 23 games left in the Southern League’s second-half race, while the fourth-place Lookouts dropped to 21-26. The temperature at first pitch was 103 degrees.
Brett Jackson tripled and scored for the Smokies and Trayvon Robinson tripled and scored for the Lookouts during the first inning, but Tennessee broke the game open with a four-run second. Tony Campana’s double to right scored Steve Clevenger and Tony Thomas, and Campana wound up scoring on Savage’s balk.
The Smokies extended their lead to 8-1 in the fourth when Matthew Spencer hit a three-run home run to right.
Jesus Castillo (4-6, 2.87) is scheduled to start tonight’s 7:15 game for the Lookouts, with Craig Muschko (7-3, 3.82) scheduled for the Smokies. A packed house is expected for “Used Car Night.”
