Mayer, a 6-year-old hound mix, has been a resident at the Humane Educational Society of Chattanooga for three years, longer than any other dog on the property, officials said.

“Mayer’s a really sweet dog,” said Guy Bilyeu, executive director. “He gets along well with people and other dogs, too.”

In celebration of its 100th anniversary, the Humane Education Society will continue its $19.10 adoption fee through the end of this month, thanks to an anonymous donor, said Bilyeu. So any of the 500 or so cats or dogs can be yours for a song … or bark or meow. The regular adoption fee is $85, Bilyeu said.

If you want to adopt Mayer, however, you won’t have to pay. He is one of five dogs whose adoption fees have been covered by another volunteer. So he’s yours for free.

The Humane Society is at 212 N. Highland Park Ave. and is open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday and noon-4 p.m. Friday. For information call 624-5302.
