Woman finds house on fire during work break

A Highland Park woman stopped at her house this afternoon to find black smoke pouring out.

Veronica Kitchens called 911 from the front yard of her 2300-block N. Chamberlain Avenue home at 1:30 p.m., according to a Chattanooga Fire Department news release.

Firefighters entered the home, found and extinguished the kitchen fire that had crept into the attic.

Kitchens, a bus driver for the Orange Grove Center, had stopped at her house on a work break when she discovered the blaze.

American Red Cross volunteers provided assistance to Kitchens and her two children, ages 16 and 19 years old.

Investigators ruled the cause accidental, likely from a pot of hot grease left on the stove. No injuries were reported.
