Our air and food

In addition to the air we breathe, safe food is among the necessities of life.

We want clean air and good, wholesome food, even though our choices sometimes devolve to “junk” and things that “just taste good,” whether they are “good for us” or not.

Food has been very much in the news recently in alarming respects.

After reading about a serious salmonella infection of some eggs, some of us may not have enjoyed our breakfast, just wondering. Salmonella problems have forced the recall from markets of more than half a billion eggs. Of course, because of inspection and care, most egg eaters haven’t been adversely affected. But a few cases of painful and some of mild digestive illnesses have been reported.

Fortunately, there are major efforts to ensure our food supplies are safe, and to head off and eliminate problems.

The egg reports have come just after there were concerns about shrimp shipments from the Gulf of Mexico as a result of the recent big oil-well leak there.

It is difficult to police our varied food supply. And it is very costly. It is not foolproof. But isn’t it remarkable that all of us eat every day with so few complications?
