Adding to the excitement of another football season for the folks in South Pittsburg is the return of one of the town’s biggest heroes. Former Pirates star player Eddie Moore has accepted the position of market leader at First Volunteer Bank and will be moving his family back home to South Pittsburg in early September.
Moore was a Tennessee Mr. Football finalist who played linebacker at the University of Tennessee and in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos.
“We all make our own plans, but God has his and this was a situation that he made happen,” Moore said. “I had always planned to eventually come back home, just not this soon, but this opportunity came up and I couldn’t be happier to be bringing my family back home.
“This is a great chance for me to get back home and give back to my community. My heart has always been there, so my wife and I are real excited.”
After working for a commercial real estate company in Knoxville, Moore worked for an information technology company in Charlotte (N.C.) before accepting the offer to return home.
There will be a tailgate party, with free food, to welcome Moore back to South Pittsburg and kick off the season tonight at First Volunteer Bank, located at 131 South Cedar Ave.
“I know everybody will ask me about whether I’m working with the football team, but my first priority is with First Volunteer Bank,” Moore said. “The coaches don’t need me sticking my nose in a whole lot. They’ve been winning a lot of games without me for years.
“But I would love to be able to be a mentor to any of those kids and just give them advice about making the right choices. Maybe they’ll listen more to me since they know I’m from there and I’ve gone through a lot of the same things they are now. I’m glad to be back so that I can be around to help my school and my community.”
