Chattanooga: Moccasin Bend bank stabilization work to begin in January

Work is set to start in January on the bank stabilization of Moccasin Bend to stop archaeological resources and real estate from being swept away by the Tennessee River. The work also will mark the first clear signs of progress on the newest segment of the nation’s oldest national military park.

In announcing the plan, U.S. Park Service officials and Friends of Moccasin Bend Park also honored U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp, who obtained the funding for the project and much of the nation’s first archeological district’s planned startup.

“We’re losing on average a foot of the park each year,” said Sam Weddle, a ranger and the spokesman of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, which will take on Moccasin Bend as a new park district.

Wamp, as a 3rd District congressman from Chattanooga, championed the establishment of the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District as the newest unit of the nation’s oldest military park.
