I-24 lanes reopen after Monteagle slide

The westbound lanes of Interstate 24 are open again after a rock slide on Monteagle Mountain, a TDOT spokeswoman said.

Jennifer Flynn with the Tennessee Department of Transportation said about 500 tons of rock fell at mile marker 137 shortly before 3 p.m. EST. Marion County 911 dispatchers said that’s in the second curve going up the mountain.

Flynn said a slide about 60 feet long fell into a catchment area alongside the highway and some rocks bounced into the travel lanes, blocking two lanes. She said all the lanes have been cleared and barrels placed at the edge of the slide. TDOT personnel will remain there all night and the agency’s geotechnical engineers will be called in to inspect the area, probably tomorrow.

Marion County dispatchers said a rock hit a car and caused a collision involving three vehicles, but no one was injured.
