Aron Ralston, the hiker who while stuck in a Utah canyon amputated his own arm to save his life, will be the featured speaker at the Red Cross Hometown Heroes Luncheon.
The fourth annual luecheon will honor five local heroes selected from nominations submitted by the community and will take place Wednesday, March 30, at the Chattanooga Convention Center.
“Aron is an exceptional human being and we are fortunate to have him speak at our Hometown Heroes luncheon,” Barbara Alexander, chief executive officer of the Greater Chattanooga Area American Red Cross, said in a news release.
During a day hike in Utah, Ralston was pinned against a canyon wall by an 800 pound boulder. After five days of trying to lift or break the boulder, a dehydrated and delirious Ralston decided that the only way to save himself was to sever his arm.
His story is the subject of the film “127 Hours,” which has received two Golden Globe nominations.
