Good 2011 job prospects

All of us are directly affected by the status of our local economy. We are ending the year 2010 with some shaky conditions nationwide. But happily, as we look toward the beginning of 2011, our Chattanooga-area residents have reasons for economic optimism.

Construction of the big, new Volkswagen plant is under way, getting ready to provide more than 2,000 good jobs for area people.

Bradley County’s Wacker Chemical is another major local business gain.

And Internet retailer Amazon.com soon will have lots of people filling product orders from throughout the country at distribution centers in Hamilton and Bradley counties.

There are also some smaller new companies here, too. Put them all together and multiply their economic effects as thousands of local people have local jobs doing local business of many kinds, and Chattanooga clearly is on a sound economic path.

As we give thanks for better prospects than many other communities throughout the country have, it is important for all of us as individuals, and through our private and public institutions, to assure the cooperation that will make the most of our very promising local opportunities.
