Dade has shot at Jackets again

TRENTON, Ga. — Is it panic time in this basketball-crazy town?

The Dade County Wolverines lost twice in less than a week, causing some to question whether the team’s breakneck style of play would work against teams that know them well. Coach Glen Hicks says it’s not the style, it’s the execution that has hurt his team recently.

“We’ve got to believe in our system,” said Hicks, whose team has averaged more than 100 points in its 19 wins. “People say we need to slow down and maybe shoot less. Heck, we’re going to shoot some more if anything.”

Tonight, the Wolverines will get a shot at revenge by hosting the team that gave them their first loss. Region 7-AA North rival Calhoun edged the cold-shooting Wolverines in the first meeting. Coach Casey Baxter had his defense concentrate on Dade’s three hot-shooting guards — Andrew Houts, Travis Core and Jake Bell — and dared the other players to beat them.

“We played our best game of the season with a lot of effort and energy,” said Baxter, whose team is 10-5, 4-2 in league play. “We wanted to keep Houts, Core and Bell from going off, and for the most part it worked. We’ll have to play just as hard to stay with them Tuesday.”
