Chattanooga: City could halt construction on Fairmount Avenue

The Chattanooga City Council could vote to stop any new construction tonight along a road where the Chattanooga Housing Authority plans to expand a complex in North Chattanooga.

“We’re putting the brakes on the Housing Authority’s freight train,” Mayor Ron Littlefield said today.

The council will vote on a resolution during its 6 p.m. regularly scheduled business meeting, calling for a four-month moratorium on building permits on Fairmount Avenue.

The Chattanooga Housing Authority had plans to build a 36-unit complex on the site with $4.2 million in federal stimulus funds.

But the complex met resistance from the nearby residents, who said the street was too narrow for that many apartments.

Fairmount Apartments now has 24 units, but most are unoccupied.

City officials said the moratorium would end any type of construction in the area until studies are complete to show the feasibility of the project.
