Not ‘happy New Year’ in gunfire

There are many harmless — and some dangerous — way that people customarily celebrate the arrival of a New Year. But one of the worst is the firing of guns in the air — not thinking that “what goes up must come down.”

In Decatur, Ga., the worst happened.

“Someone” celebrated the New Year by shooting in the air — but the falling bullet came through the roof of the Church of God of Prophecy in Decatur, of all places — and killed a 4-year-old little boy who was attending New Year’s Eve services near Atlanta.

The little boy was identified as Marquel Peters. Just consider how his parents and fellow worshipers must feel as a result of that tragedy, that never should have occurred and which common sense could so easily have avoided.

Of course, whoever fired the fatal shot did not intend to kill anyone. But it’s too late now to take a finger off the trigger that fired the shot that tragically took a young life.
