North Georgia: Ice forming on roads

Ice is forming on roads in North Georgia and authorities are warning motorists to use extreme caution.

“We’re getting slammed,” a Walker County Sheriff’s Office employee said at 2 p.m. “If they don’t need to be out, they don’t need to be out.”

She said roads were icing across the county on main and side roads.

Snow began falling at noon in Ringgold and had covered cars and pavement by 1 p.m., witnesses said. By 2 p.m. roads and sidewalks were covered with a slushy mix and traffic on Battlefield Parkway had slowed to a crawl.

No snow was falling in Dalton, Ga., as of 2 p.m. but Whitfield County Schools advanced dismissal times. Elementary schools are dismissing at 2 p.m. and middle and high schools at 3 p.m., spokesman Eric Beavers said.
