Chattapets: Growl back when puppy bites

Q: My new puppy bites, and I know it’s just a puppy thing. How can I get her to stop without hitting her or biting back?

A: Puppy biting is annoying but normal. However, it can develop into actual biting if not corrected when young. As with all puppy training, the key is consistency. Even when it’s very tiny, a dog should not be allowed to put its mouth on any part of your body.

Hitting a dog is not an effective form of training. Dogs do not hit each other. Behavior modification is your goal. When the puppy bites, make a deep guttural ahaherrrrr sound like an angry growl, loud enough to surprise the puppy and stop the biting. Then offer him an acceptable alternative to chew.
