Sunday at Chattanooga Market is “one of the most delicious days on the calendar,” says market manager Paul Smith.
It’s the sixth annual Ice Cream Social, and Children’s Home Chambliss Shelter will scoop up the benefits.
This year, six creameries will be selling ice cream: Bruster’s, Clumpies, Mayfield, Nana’s, Rosie’s and Ice Cream Show. A $5 donation buys 12 samples, two from each vendor. Then you can vote for Best Pure Flavor Ice Cream and Best Ice Cream With Inclusion.
“Chattanoogans love ice cream, and we have the greatest creameries in town represented here,” Smith said. “It’s fun to watch people as they eat the huge variety of flavors. And knowing that 100 percent of the proceeds go to help the children that Chambliss serves warms the heart just as much as the ice cream cools you down.”
The Children’s Home provides early childhood education and child care for low-income, single-parent families. It is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. The Chambliss Shelter serves children ages 6-18 who experience significant problems because of neglect, abandonment or abuse.
In addition to ice cream, market visitors can enjoy performances by Nashville-based singer/songwriters Wendy Jans, an Iowa native, and Joelle Maddyson, originally of Louisiana. Jans said she was inspired by performers Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker and Karen Carpenter.
Maddyson lists Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell and Ani DiFranco among her influences.
