Local voters will get a chance to meet many local Democratic candidates tonight during two events in Chattanooga.

According to organizers, though, the events were almost a scheduling snafu.

Officials with the Greater Democratic Women’s Club say they long had planned to host more than a dozen local candidates tonight at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers building. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike McWherter is expected to attend.

But local radio host Stuart James decided he also wanted to host an event at Rock Point Books for local Democratic 3rd District congressional candidates for his show, “The Truth Factor” on WPLZ-FM.

“This was the date that came up, and I decided to stick with it,” Mr. James said. “It was originally at the same time (as the other event), and I moved mine.”

Mr. James said his event will feature three of the four 3rd District Democratic candidates: John Wolfe, Alicia Mitchell and Brent Davis Staton. Topics will range from the economy to Afghanistan, he said.

Pat Combs, second vice president of the Greater Chattanooga Democratic Women’s Club, said candidates at the club’s event will be there to greet the public. Ms. Combs said the scheduling is no longer an issue.

“There was an issue but we’re going to forget about it,” she said.

Jeff Brown, chairman of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, said planners for both events had limited options.

“There were just a handful of dates to choose from so they picked what they could,” he said.
