Pool rescue

A special meeting Monday could determine whether East Ridge rescues a private pool from debt’s deep end.

Handicapped by financial trouble that started with unpaid taxes, the East Ridge Youth Foundation asked the city to buy the pool property, make necessary repairs and open it for swimming by this summer.

The last request came only weeks before May 7, the day Community National Bank scheduled the property’s foreclosure sale on the Hamilton County Courthouse steps.

East Ridge City Manager William Whitson said he asked the bank to stop those proceedings since city officials were interested in buying the property, and the bank agreed to postpone foreclosure.

But when Mr. Whitson realized the pool’s surface, plumbing and concessions stand were all in “major states of disrepair,” he thought twice about having kids splash around, at least for this summer.
